The Feast of San Pancrazio at Calvi dell'Umbria

The Feast of San Pancrazio at Calvi dell'Umbria

Religious celebration and charming re-enactment of events of local history, in which an entire community is involved, which recalls in this celebratory context the centuries-old link with its past, its spiritual roots and rich traditions. The Feast of San Pancrazio is the most attended and important event in Calvi-a place of medieval origin in southern Umbria-which organizes some appealing events in honour of the patron saint every year from 11 to 14 May. Over time, the celebrations for the  Saint, martyred at the age of fourteen under the empire of Diocletian and protector of Calvi since the fifteenth century, have been combined with the representation, preceded by the parade in costume, of the episode of the "revision of the borders" for the possession of Mount San Pancrazio, disputed in the Middle Ages between Calvi and Poggio di Otricoli: with an act signed in 1456 the territorial limits of the two castles were established. The feast begins with the announcement of a herald. The main “characters” of the re-enactment are four “Signorini”, who represent the young martyr, and four “Gonfalonieri”, to whom the banners of the districts belonging to the municipal area are delivered by the Mayor during the ceremony of “Vestizione”. The large banners bear the image of the Saint and their colours, red and white, symbolize the sacrifice of the young Christian. On May 12, the anniversary of his martyrdom, after the Mass, the first Signorino and the first Gonfaloniere and the escort go to the top of Mount San Pancrazio - where there is a chapel dedicated to the martyr - and around the wall that marks the line of historic borders the re-enactment takes place. The other Signorini and Gonfalonieri await their return - in the afternoon - remaining to symbolically defend the village. The day ends with a choreographic gallop of the Signorini around the banners in the centre of the square, to thank and honour the Patron.  On May 13 the main religious event of the commemorations occurs: at the end of the Mass, the procession of the relic of the "Arm of San Pancrazio" (sacred relic preserved in a silver arm) begins which, together with the historical procession, goes along the streets of the “borgo”. On the "day of accounts", the 14th, the standards are handed over to the civil authorities who are responsible for keeping them until the Vesting of the following year. The tables and banquets, offered by the families of the districts, contribute to creating a festive atmosphere, as required by the tradition of the "festaroli", offered by the families of the districts. -
