The flora and fauna of lake Piediluco

Lake Piediluco and the area around it,which constitute an ecosystem of considerable naturalistic value, are home to a rich flora and fauna population. One comes into full contact with them when taking a ride on one of the traditional local boats or aboard one of the eco-boats that reach the most hidden points of this lake habitat.
Extensive swaths of marshy meadow and reeds border the aquatic environment in different sections of its outline, while hydrophytic species float on this expanse of water, such as the peculiar yellow water lilies and the water. A beauty that must be admired up close. The areas that extend around the lake are mainly populated by Willows and Poplars. In lake Piediluco habitat live a variety of aquatic birds, among which the most numerous are the Little Grebes, the Moorhens, the Coots and the Mallards, and it is not a rarity to see the Herons, while other species arrive there during the nesting period, attracted by an uncontaminated natural environment, such as the rare Biancone.
The abundance of fish species has made fishing the main source of livelihood for the local population for many centuries. This activity until the 40s-50s of the last century was carried out,in full respect of the life of the lake, with traditional systems and tools - the latter made by fishermen with their own hands - each specific for the different types of fish. Tenches, Lucci, Anguille and Cavedani are indigenous to this basin, which is also populated by other fish varieties introduced to increase its abundance of fish. These include the Bleak, the Carp, the Whitefish and the Royal Perch. Trout is "imported" through the Velino,a tributary of the lake.
Freshwater fish predominates in the local culinary tradition, the most famous dish of which is represented by the Carbonaretti. They are prepared exclusively with perch, which is roasted over a high flame (hence the name) and then seasoned with oil and salt. Other local gastronomic specialties are spit-roasted eel, truffled trout and lake-scented tagliolini.
