Ocriculum AD 168 event

Throughout "Ocriculum AD 168" event, the Ocriculum Archaeological Area - one of the largest in central Italy - is transformed into the important Roman town of the period of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, when it reacheD peak of its prosperity. Ocriculum was built along the route of the Via Flaminia and near the river port built on a bend in the River Tiber which flows below the town of Otricoli. The river port was the hub of a significant commercial trade, from which much of the city's wealth came: via the Tiber locally produced goods were sent to Rome, such as bricks and amphorae but also food products, above all oil, so much so that the nickname "Port of Oil". The lively context linked to port activities is one of the aspects of Ocriculum life recreated during the historical re-enactment that takes place annually at the end of May. Religious rites, public ceremonies, legionary parades, castra training and fights are revived, by costumed figures. But also theatre and music performances. At the entrance door, you immediately find yourself back over two millennia with the currency exchange in sestertii, starting just after a full immersion journey between monuments unearthed by excavations and reconstructed places (one of these is the emporium), along with legionaries, gladiators, vigiles, merchants, augurs and other figures of that time. A stop at the tabernae also offers the possibility of discovering the flavours of the food of the ancient Romans. What better occasion to visit Ocriculum?
