The Sanctuary of Modonna dello Scoglio

The Sanctuary of Modonna dello Scoglio

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Scoglio  lies on a spur of rock overlooking the valley of the river Nera,. It is located near the village Casteldilago. From this delightful hamlet clinging to the top of a hill surrounded by  magnificent natural scenery of the lower Valnerina, a path leads to the hermitage, originated from an  early 16th century chapel built to house an image of the Madonna and Child painted on a rock in that same period. The picture was painted in memory of the miracle of the apparition of the Madonna in that place to a nobleman from Casteldilago, which took place a few years earlier. To accommodate the many pilgrims who came to visit the site, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the original building was enlarged and transformed into a religious complex, with a church with a nave and a cross vault. The sacred image, enclosed in a niche, is placed above the main altar. The popular veneration of the Madonna dello Scoglio is still deep-rooted and the lively  procession that every year from the village reaches the sacred monument is testament to it, renewing a tradition that dates back to the time of the miraculous event.
