Villalago

A viewpoint to enjoy a splendid view of Lake Piediluco is the hill, not far from this resort, where Villalago is located. The extraordinary environmental and natural value of the area combines with the surrounding scenic beauty. The elegant late nineteenth-century villa is surrounded by an extensive park in which centuries-old trees belonging to the wood that once entirely covered this place stand. In addition, numerous species of wild orchids grow there. Following one of the paths that wind through the natural habitat, you arrive in front of the stately home that belonged to the Franchetti family, wealthy landowners. Baron Eugenio Franchetti entrusted the project for its construction to the architect Giuseppe Boccini, who created a building of neo-Renaissance inspiration. Following hereditary disputes, in the early 1960s the ownership of the prestigious complex was acquired by the Province of Terni, which decided to make it a site open to the public. The recovery and improvement interventions concerned both the building and the park. On the occasion of the restoration, painter Mirimao decorated the ceilings of the halls(furnished with fine period furniture) with mythological scenes. The park,on the other hand, was made better enjoyable through the setting up of an open-air theater (which was one of the locations of the concerts of Umbria Jazz first editions) and spaces equipped with fireplaces and picnic tables.
