Arrone

You can reach Arrone in just a few minutes from Marmore Falls, following a short path that winds through the spectacular natural scenery of the Nera River Park.

Originally created to be one of the strongholds defending the Valnerina and controlling the road network, the oldest nucleus of the village (called La Terra) stands on a hill, maintaining the original fortified and equipped layout of the medieval castle. 

Walking through its alleys, you relive all the atmosphere of that time, with eloquent features such as the beautiful entrance gate, the 14th-century church of San Giovanni Battista, highly valued for its 15th-century frescoes like the "Crucifixion" and on top of the hill, the civic tower.

Further down, descending from the actual castle nucleus, you find the other "soul" of the village, centred around Santa Maria Assunta. The artistic value of this church lies above all in the 16th-century frescoes attributed to Vincenzo Tamagni, Giovanni da Spoleto and Jacopo Siculo.

Outside the built-up area, between Arrone and Casteldilago, you encounter the ancient convent of St Francis, another destination for pilgrims travelling along the Route of St Francis. In the adjacent church, fragments of frescoes depicting "Stories of St Francis" can still be seen.

But Arrone is also a location with a penchant for outdoor sports, a real feather in its cap. The stretch of the Nera River flowing through its territory is one of the favourite spots for canoe enthusiasts. Not to forget that in this area of the park, another highly popular water sport is rafting. It's safe to say that in this corner of Umbria, the excitement never ends.
