Torre Orsina

Torre Orsina is a delightful village on the Valnerina of Terni, perched on the summit of the Santa Maria hill, crowned by evocative views.

Torre Orsina

The history of Torre Orsina begins with the construction of a watchtower that the Municipality of Spoleto had built to guard this part of its territory (1270). This fortress identified the place, which in fact was called "Torre" (or Tower) until the second half of the 16th century. With the rule of the Orsini family, the toponym became "Torre Orsina."

The inhabited centre was arranged around the small original nucleus, functional for controlling the valley floor and the Nera River during the 14th century. The medieval nucleus, with its alleys and arches, remained unchanged and was enriched between the 16th and 18th centuries with aristocratic buildings. On the square located outside the beautiful city gate, stands the elegant late Renaissance church of Santa Maria Assunta and the ornamental fountain from the 19th century that was recently rebuilt after it was destroyed, as mentioned in the inscription it bears. Beyond the gate, the elegant Manassei Casino stands in the background, with its six-hour clock still marking time in the village.
